सूर्य धनू राशीतून मकर राशीत प्रवेश करण्याचा दिवस — उत्तरायण पुण्यकाळाचा प्रारंभ. महाराष्ट्रात तीळ-गुळ देण्याची व "तीळ-गूळ घ्या, गोड गोड बोला" म्हणण्याची प्रसिद्ध परंपरा. महिला हलव्याच्या दागिन्यांनी सजलेल्या काळ्या साडीत हळदी-कुंकू समारंभ करतात. पतंगबाजी (विशेषतः सीमावर्ती प्रदेशात). गावांत वडे-तीळगूळ-शेंगाची लाडू.
मकर संक्रांत — महत्त्व
According to the Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah chose this day to leave his body because dying during Uttarayana is considered meritorious. The Ganga is said to have descended to earth on this day. It also celebrates the end of the winter solstice.
